Evolution Of Dolby

In the industrialised countries, you may have to travel quite a great distance to find anyone who has never heard of Dolby or seen the instantly recognizable "DD" insignia on audio equipment such as pc games consoles, home and car stereos, or hdtvs.

High school student Ray Dolby became a part-time employee with Ampex Corporation Inc. and a legend was born since then. Audio instrumentation was his forte. Dolby progressed to Stanford University whilst maintaining his employment with Ampex. This was an era of discovery as he and a select group of colleagues from Ampex focused on the goal of inventing the world's first video tape recorder. They were rewarded with success in 1956 and consequently Ampex released the first video recorder onto the market at $ 50,000.

6years after graduation from Stanford, in 1957, Dolby attained his PhD from Cambridge University in England, where he studied physics as a result of the Marshall Fellowship. Dolby Laboratories Inc. came into being in 1965, which quickly produced it's first revolutionary product, the Dolby A-Type Enoise reduction. By cancelling out a significant amount of background noise, the quality of the original recording, streaming audio clarity is improved. This was the cornerstone upon which Dolby build his Sound manipulation "Empire".

By refining his technique of soft and loud isolating and amplifying the signals soft signals, Dolby successfully produced noise reduction capabilities. Furthermore By creating bands within the sound spectrum to limit clashing and pumping, white noise wasgenerated. This methodology was rapidly aquamaps data sources: GBIF in new and emerging electronic entertainment systems. Following its introduction, consumers quickly became enamoured of the stereo sound, favouring it over the relatively dull and flat "mono" previously available in radio and cassette players.

The innovation became so popular that movie theatres quickly adopted it. In fact the movie Star Wars first showcased Dolby Sound and has since gone from strength to strength. The listenablity aspect of the equipment or products continue to exponentially enhance the user's experience. Movie theatres could be in danger of becoming obsolete as more and more people opt to install Dolby enhanced home cinema systems.

LCD HDTV-Is There a Difference?

Well, there is a big difference. In fact it is difficult to compare two so different things. They are all related to television picture but mean different things. Years ago there was mainly only one television "definition" or television picture resolution (actually there were few of them but pretty similar) which was in technical circles known as standard definition (SD). The only available type of displaying TV picture was Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) display. The things were pretty simple despite the fact that there were few color TV standards (PAL in Europe and in many other countries, in the USA and Japan NTSC, SECAM in Russia and France). In the last years all TV sets were capable of displaying all TV standards used around the world.

With the introduction of the digital TVbroadcasting television has changed significantly. There are now many different services that were not possible with analog broadcasting. hdtv is one of them. hdtv means High Definition TeleVision. High definition means picture with more lines and more pixels (points) in a line. The good old SD television picture uses between 525 to 625 lines depending on the system used. This system was good enough and survived for decades. The only improvement was addition of colors in the late 1950s (or early 1960s in Europe). Two facts contributed to this pretty long life of the old standard definition TV. The first one is than there was no easy way to add features or to modify basic picture or transmission parameters. The second one was that the picture was pretty good (less true for NTSC used in USA andmore true for PAL used in Europe). With the introduction of digital broadcasting one of the first major improvements was the introduction of HDTV. It means a picture with more lines. HDTV picture brings more sharpness and more details.

LCDS on the other hand is a technology to TV or computer display picture. There are currently two technologies to display HDTV picture: plasma and LCD. Each has some advantages and disadvantages. You should not be concerned by technical details that mean nothing to you. If you are choosing a new TV set then simply take a look at the picture. Compare different models, features and prices. Usually larger TV sets use plasma technology while smaller ones are using LCD displays.
